When on vacation, even the best of us can overindulge and put our fitness on the back burner. When we spend hours on a plane, take long road trips or travel for business, it can make it hard to stick to our normal routines… Hello Pina Coladas poolside! These tips will help you stay on track while you’re away:
Drink Plenty of Water
Exposing your body to germs, different temperatures and changing elevations takes a toll on your skin and can leave you dehydrated. Pack a refillable water bottle to carry with you. Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up every morning (this is also a surefire way to help you recover if you’ve eaten too much).
Pack Better Snacks
Munch on nuts, healthy snacks, trail mix or grab a banana with your post-flight coffee at Starbucks. Having healthy snacks on hand will help ensure you don’t make a craving-induced decision you might regret later. When you eat a salad on the road, squeeze a little lemon over the greens to avoid the unnecessary sugar and calories that can be lurking in restaurant dressing.
Use Your Hotel Fridge
Take out anything that’s pre-stocked and doesn’t need to be refrigerated (but put it visibly aside so you don’t get charged) and replace it with yogurt, carrots, celery sticks, hummus and other healthy snacks. If you have these on hand, you will forget about those chips in the vending machine. If you’re lucky and your room has a freezer be sure to toss in a few Luvo entrées, these are especially great for breakfast!
Bring a step counter or a Fit Bit and see how far you actually walk every day! It will help keep you motivated and on track (an added bonus to walking is discovering interesting sights along the way you may, that you may have missed driving).
Prioritize Working Out
Use your hotel gym or pool. If there isn’t either, there are many options to completing a quick workout in your room. Check out Dai Manuel’s post to learn some quick body weight exercises you can do anywhere, if you’re more outdoorsy try something from this list. You can also pack one of these lightweight exercise gear options. They will help ward off body aches caused from traveling and sitting for long periods. Remember to pack your sneakers!
- Therapy Balls: Yoga Tune Up ($11.95).
- Packable Yoga Mat: eKO SuperLite Travel Mat from Manduka ($40)
- Resistance Bands: This is the ultimate on-the-go training tool. Resistance bands are extremely portable while also being extremely versatile.
When are out for dinner at a restaurant, take a moment to consider what to order. Say no to that free breadbasket; order the dressing on the side; substitute fries with a salad or grilled vegetables and stick with water instead of soda. Try some of these easy swaps for more common sauces and condiments.
