The average American adult spends at least eight hours sitting each day, which is concerning when you consider that sitting all day is not great for your health, and might even lead to disease or a shortened lifespan. Thankfully, a lot of people are learning about these dangers and are taking steps to prevent them. These measures include using standing desks or exercise balls instead of chairs, or incorporating more activity into their daily lives.

Are you one of the many people who can’t avoid sitting for extended periods of time each day? Try these tips for staying active:

Take breaks for planks and stretches

It’s important to schedule regular movement into your day if you’re sitting for several hours at a time. One of my favorite ways to do this is called the Pomodoro Technique, which is a popular time management tool you can apply to pretty much any task.

In this instance, you can use the Pomodoro Technique to help you get up and moving in regular intervals during your workday. Simply set a timer (the one on your phone works fine) for anywhere from 25-45 minutes. When the timer goes off, take a five-minute break to do some exercises, such as planks, push-ups or stretches. You can even just walk around the office! When your exercise break is over, set the timer again, and repeat throughout your day.

Bring a roller to work every day

You may have heard the term ‘foam rolling’ being thrown around, but what is it exactly? Foam rolling is also known as self-myofascial release and involves using a foam tube to massage your muscles and release tension by essentially ‘rolling’ on different parts of your body. Sitting all day no doubt causes tense muscles, which can lead to soreness or injury, so incorporating foam rolling into your day is a good idea. If you’ve never used a foam roller before, here are some moves you can try: 10 Foam Roller Moves For Your Entire Body.

Invest 2% of every day in you

Commit to investing just 30 minutes a day in yourself (that’s only 2% of your day!) and you can make some major progress toward a healthier body, mind and spirit. This is one of the core principles of my Whole Life Fitness Manifesto and it’s really easy to do. The above suggestions are just a few of the things you can do in those 30 minutes and you can access many more if you sign up to become part of the WLFM community!

Bonus tip: Make a quick lunch at work!
