Smoothies have to be the top food of the current century, right? I mean, think about it: They are ideally suited for how we live today. They’re portable, matching our need to eat on the go because of our oft-rushed lifestyles, and they are infinitely customizable, reflecting our desire to tailor our lives to our precise tastes. Just a quick google will give you almost 50 million hits about smoothies. So with all that information, and infinite combinatory options, where do you start for creating the perfect one?

These smoothie tips are an attempt to boil down the myriad articles and our personal experiences into a few concise considerations to help you craft the ideal smoothie for you. Tip 1: Go green
This tip is so easy it’s amazing more people don’t do it. Get a dose or two of vegetables and increase the nutritional value of your smoothie by throwing in a couple handfuls of your favourite green veggies. You’ll increase the water content of your beverage as well. All of these work:

Not-Gross Fresh Green Smoothie
- ½ cup orange or apple juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 cup kale, washed (we like dinosaur kale)
- ½ cup bananas, sliced, frozen
- ¼ cup cucumber, chopped, frozen
- 1 teaspoon ginger, peeled
- 2 sprigs fresh mint
- Protein: 2-3 tablespoons of hemp seeds or ¼ cup raw cashews
- Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed for 2 minutes.
- Serve immediately and enjoy (serves 1)
Tip 2: Sweeten it right
A bit of sweetness is important, but you don’t want to overdo it. If you’re loading up on fruit, you might not need a sweetener, since smoothie fruit favorites like bananas, mangos, pineapple and berries provide a decent amount of natural sweetness. If your smoothie is a bit light on fruit, you could consider natural sweeteners, such as:
- Maple syrup
- Dates, figs, raisins (if you can deal with the texture)
Tip 3: Bag your frozen ingredients ahead of time
Everyone recommends freezing bananas for smoothies, and with good reason: you won’t end up with clumpy banana in your drink, and it’s also convenient, as you can save bananas that would otherwise go bad. Freezing an assortment of fruit is great, as it’ll help you make your smoothie in a hurry. Prepare a few bags with your ideal fruit mix ahead of time, then simply pull out a bag when you’re ready to blend.
Tip 4: Consider texture carefully
